Thumbs up, thumbs down

Thumbs up to Jim Barnes of Visalia and other volunteers who fix bicycles for free every Wednesday at the Visalia Rescue Mission. They've been providing this service for about five years now. Teaming with Barnes are Dave Freitas, Mike Robertson, Rick McFarlane, Carlos Flores of Cyclery Xpress and Andre Cloutier. After learning about the bike maintenance project, the Visalia Breakfast Rotary Club pledged $1,000 for tools and six months of parts.

Thumbs up to the Madera County Board of Supervisors. The board unanimously approved a $10 million solar project that will power 50% of county government facilities. County Administrative Officer Eric Fleming says that solar power will save the county $13.9 million over 30 years. Construction is scheduled to start in April and wrap up by the end of 2014.

Thumbs up to Coach Tim DeRuyter, quarterback Derek Carr and other members of the 2013 Fresno State football team. They didn't let the sting of their upset loss to rival San Jose State — and the end of their BCS bowl hopes — prevent them from completing their quest for the Mountain West Conference championship.

Thumbs up to members of the Fresno Police Department's Southeast District investigations unit. They served dinner to 140 residents of Senior Citizens Village on Thursday night. The event has become a much-appreciated tradition by residents over the past two decades.
