Martin Freeman returns as Bilbo Baggins in "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug."

WARNER BROS.

Here’s a test for a true Tolkien fan. In Fresno, UA Broadway Faire 10, Regal Manchester Stadium and Edwards Fresno Stadium 22 offer a double feature Thursday night -- “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey,” followed by the debut of "The Desolation of Smaug."

The twinbill starts at 8:30 p.m. The cost is $20.

The second chapter in "The Hobbit" trilogy from director Peter Jackson opens locally in a more traditional manner at 12:01 a.m. Friday. That's right -- one minute past midnight Thursday.
