A Tulare County resident's attempt to keep his dogs warm backfired when the barbecue he lit apparently ignited a fire in the shed that housed the animals, killing all three dogs and a puppy, the Tulare County Fire Department said.
Crews arrived shortly after 9 a.m Monday at a property east of Dinuba, where they found a storage shed fully engulfed in flames behind a mobile home. Firefighters were able to put out the fire before it spread to the mobile home near Road 100 and El Monte Way, but the dogs died in the fire. Dinuba Animal Control picked up the remains.
Two people were also taken to a hospital for minor burns and smoke inhalation.
The resident of the mobile home told fire crews he did everything he could to save the animals. The fire's cause was listed as undetermined as the resident's statement could not be backed up by the building's remnants, the department said.
