A fire Saturday night at a downtown church in Fresno that caused $50,000 in damage is believed to be arson, and one person has been arrested in connection with the case.
The fire at Power House Institutional Church on N Street started about 11:40 p.m. on a palm tree outside and then spread into the church, Fresno Fire Department battalion chief Casey Clark said.
The fire caused extensive damage to the church roof and attic, Clark said.
Police Lt. Joe Gomez said first officers on the scene were told by witnesses that two people were seen running away from the church. Officers stopped Craig Randell Gaut, 52, on a nearby street and determined he was responsible for the fire.
Gaut was being held in Fresno County Jail on Monday on arson and trespassing charges.
No other details were released.
