San Jose Mercury NewsNovember 23, 2013

A Visalia man was killed when a car crashed early Saturday morning on Highway 1 just south of Devils Slide in San Mateo County, authorities said.

The collision led authorities to close all lanes of the highway, near the new Tom Lantos Tunnels just south of Pacifica, for several hours on Saturday, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The CHP said the crash occurred shortly after 3 a.m. and the roadway did not reopen until 8:30 a.m.

Sanjeev Joshi, 23, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the San Mateo County Coroner's Office. Authorities said three other people in the car were transported to San Francisco General Hospital for treatment of unspecified injuries. It was unclear if Joshi was the driver or a passenger in the 2008 BMW sedan that crashed.

The cause of the crash was under investigation, and a CHP dispatcher said no details were available Saturday. Contrary to initial reports, the dispatcher said, only one vehicle was involved in the accident.
