The Chowchilla brother and sister killed early Sunday morning in a car crash on Highway 99 were identified as Omar Chavez Garcia, 20, and Karina Chavez, 12, the Madera County Sheriff's Department reported.

Garcia was driving south on Highway 99 near Avenue 18 1/2 when his 1998 Ford Ranger pickup entered the median, returned to the roadway and then overturned, according to the collision report. Both Garcia and Chavez, who were not wearing seat belts, were thrown from the vehicle and died of their injuries.

Another car traveling south on Highway 99 struck Chavez' body but did not stop.

The California Highway Patrol is investigating the incident.
