A Riverdale woman who simply wanted to support a good cause has won the dream home built by De Young Properties during the annual St. Jude Dream Home Giveaway.
Lynn Higdon's winning ticket was pulled from among 10,500 tickets on Sunday night during a live drawing on KMPH (Channel 26.1). Higdon won a 3,298-square-foot house valued at $425,000, with four bedrooms and three bathrooms in the CountryCourt community at Armstrong and Gettysburg avenues in Clovis.
"When the letter came in the mail we just filled it out and sent it in to support the children fighting cancer," Higdon told the station. "We just wanted to donate, we have purchased six tickets in the past six years."
Higdon declined to provide additional details about herself to the station or other media outlets, and passed on a chance to visit the home Sunday night.
Higdon wasn't the only winner. Another 20 people from across the Valley won smaller prizes in the contest including free gasoline for a year valued at $3,000, a $10,000 shopping spree for Ashley Furniture HomeStore, a lady's diamond ring, a Samsung flat-panel 3D TV, and an entertainment system, said Paula DeYoung with DeYoung Properties.
This year's donations marked a new record, raising $1,053,200 for the hospital. In the 10 years of Dream Home drawings in the Valley, the event has raised more than $9 million.
"We were so excited because the community uses their hard-earned dollars to support children fighting cancer and other life-threatening diseases," DeYoung said. "It's an amazing feeling to see the community's support."
