A 20-year-old Chowchilla man and his 12-year-old sister were killed early Sunday in a car crash on Highway 99 near Madera, the California Highway Patrol said.
The brother was behind the wheel of a Ford Ranger pickup about 5:40 a.m. heading south near Avenue 18 1/2 with his sister as a passenger when he swerved into the center median. As he attempted to correct himself, the pickup overturned throwing the brother and sister out of the vehicle and onto the highway. The siblings, who were not wearing seat belts, died on the road, the CHP said.
Authorities said after the initial collision, a dark or red colored SUV or minivan hit the body of the 12-year-old girl. The driver did not stop to help, the CHP said. Officers are attempting to identify and locate the vehicle.
