Who made it out to the free welcome home party for Valley veterans? I was one of the hundreds gathered at FYI to welcome home 69 of our Valley vets Thursday night. It was a spectacular sight, with American flags, homemade signs, the Fresno State band and cheerleaders, and every branch of the military. There were bikers in leather jackets, kids in trick-or-treat costumes and everything in between. There were all age groups -- babies, teenagers, men in shirts and ties, and lots of us "older folks."
What could dampen the homecoming? How about the sticker shock of paying $11 for parking? The arrival of the vets at close to 6 p.m. was way beyond the published time of 4:30 p.m. Upon their arrival, the vets paraded through the terminal to the baggage carousel. Exiting the parking lot, even with four lines of cars, took a long time.
Although the city of Fresno declared the day in honor of the Valley vets, and the welcome home party was advertised as free, some entity made a ton of money on the attendees' parking, through no fault of their own -- the city of Fresno, FYI or who?
