SENDAI, Japan — The Rakuten Eagles beat the Yomiuri Giants 3-0 in Game 7 of the Japan Series on Sunday to win their first championship and give a boost to a region still recovering from the 2011 earthquake and tsunami.
Series MVP Manabu Mima held the visiting Giants to one hit while striking out five over six scoreless innings, and former Fresno State star Casey McGehee drove in a run in the first inning.
The Eagles are the only pro baseball team in the Tohoku region that was devastated by the March 11, 2011, disaster that killed nearly 19,000. The team's home stadium also was severely damaged.
The Giants are the oldest and most successful team in Japanese baseball with 22 championships. The Eagles are in just their ninth season.
