David White's Three-Point Stance: 49ers GM Trent Baalke takes in Fresno State game

Special to The Fresno BeeNovember 2, 2013

Fresno State scored a gem when it landed Davante Adams in its recruiting Class of 2011. As he finishes just his sophomore season, he continues to rewrite Bulldogs single-season and career receiving records.

-- 1. 49ers General Manager Trent Baalke didn’t come all this way to Bulldog Stadium on a bye weekend to fetch himself another quarterback. Guess he wantsis he wantsto make things right after his falling-down swing and miss on A.J. Jenkins — the NFL team’s first-round pick in 2012 who was traded after one season and no catches. A good place to start could be Bulldogs phenom Davante Adams, the sort of tall, fast and physical receiver the Bill Parcells disciple loves.

-- 2. Before we get too down on Baalke for the Jenkins miss, let’s remember he had a big say on the gamble the 49ers took on injured receiver Michael Crabtree in the 2009 draft. Sure, Crabtree has missed this season after offseason Achilles surgery, but it sure beats being the team that drafted Darrius Heyward-Bey three slots earlier with the No. 7 overall pick (See Raiders, Oakland).

-- 3. Oakland Raiders, playoff contenders? Sure, the Eye Patches won’t catch the Broncos or Chiefs this season, but at 3-4, they are just one game behind the Chargers for the second AFC wild-card spot as they hit the midway point today against the Eagles. This is Game 2 of a seven-game stretch against opponents with a .500 record or worse — which makes them all winnable. Of course, those opponents are looking at Oakland’s record and thinking the same thing.
