Because some people use stolen credit cards, store clerks check IDs -- mine included. But I don't mind being "mistrusted." In fact, I'm glad when they check my ID, because I know it reduces cheating, and keeps prices lower.
In a similar way, I'm glad they deduct Social Security and Medicare contributions from my paychecks. Our society, through taxes or charity, takes care of people who don't save for their own retirement. It makes sense to require people to contribute, to take responsibility for their own futures. That lowers the burden on the rest of us.
Our society also takes care of people who get their health care in emergency rooms, even if they can't or won't pay. (The alternative: lots of sick people around to infect the rest of us!) To cover those people, hospitals have to raise their prices -- on us!
So it makes sense to require people to get health insurance, as Obamacare does. That effectively keeps prices lower for the rest of us. Obamacare also emphasizes preventive care, which cuts the need for expensive emergency room treatments.
Taking responsibility for oneself is classic conservatism, and conservatives ought to support these programs rather than oppose them.
