Thumbs up, thumbs down

Thumbs up to Lance Tullis and the Central California Music Association for purchasing the boarded-up home of country music legend Bob Wills in east Fresno. The nonprofit music association plans to move the home to Prather and restore it. Tullis estimates the cost at $75,000. A "Raise the Roof" fundraiser held last week was attended by Wills' daughter Carolyn. Wills, known as the "King of Western Swing," died in 1975 at the age of 70 in Fort Worth, Texas.

Thumbs up to the city of Fresno and many volunteers for the $1.3 million renovation of the Ted C. Wills Community Center. The center, which serves an average of 500 people in the area of Belmont and Blackstone avenues, has new paint and lighting, improved irrigation and remodeled bathrooms and locker rooms. The renovations are part of an effort to improve city parks. City Manager Bruce Rudd said that Dickey and Romain playgrounds will receive $1 million in upgrades. In addition, the city opened a new gym on California Avenue in southwest Fresno that will be operated by a partnership of three groups.

Thumbs up to Al Perry, former director of the Veterans Administration Central California Health Care System, and Fresno broadcaster Paul Loeffler for their continuing hard work in support of veterans. Perry and Loeffler are the driving forces in Central Valley Honor Flight, which took 69 World War II veterans to Washington, D.C., to see the World War II Memorial this week. The vets also had lunch at the Library of Congress. Honor Flight plans another trip in March.
