An inmate from Kings County was found dead in his cell early Friday morning at Kern Valley State Prison in Delano, prison officials said.
Inmate Carmen T. Guerrero, 48, who was serving a life sentence for second-degree murder, was pronounced dead at 12:39 a.m.
Officials are investigating the death as a homicide. Preliminary reports indicate he died from strangulation.
Prison officials have named Guerrero's cellmate, Miguel Crespo, 42, as a suspect. Crespo is serving a life sentence from Los Angeles County for first-degree murder.
Kern Valley State Prison opened in 2005 and houses 3,707 inmates, with restrictions ranging from minimum to high-security.
