Two Cities Marathon & Half on track for 5,000 runners

The Fresno BeeOctober 30, 2013

Nearly 4,000 runners are registered for the 13th annual Two Cities Marathon & Half that will travel Sunday through north Fresno and Clovis.

The event, which started as a half-marathon before race organizers added the 26.2-mile full marathon in 2008, had up to 6,000 runners in recent years.

But this time around, organizers decided to cap registrations at 5,000 and it appears they're on track to hit that figure.

Even with runners strung out along blocked-off streets, space often still is at a premium.

"It's a more manageable number and doesn't crowd the streets as much for the runners," said Liz McAfee, one of the organizers.

Entries are still primarily local — with more than 75% coming from Fresno, Clovis, Visalia and neighboring communities.

That includes Fresno's Jesus Campos, chasing a fourth straight men's marathon title. Campos ran a half-marathon last weekend and did the Twin Cities Marathon in Minneapolis a month ago.

"I'm feeling good," said Campos, who finished in a personal-record 2 hours, 24 minutes, 27 seconds last year. "Hopefully, I have a good race and post another personal best."

The Two Cities Marathon & Half begins at Friant Road and Audubon Drive. The marathon follows an out-and-back course to Old Town Clovis and Friant Road at Willow Avenue before finishing inside Woodward Park.

The Clovis Half marathon is an out-and-back to Old Town, while the Fresno Half follows Friant Road.

Friant Road and Shepherd Avenue are the primary streets affected by the races, along with the Old Town Clovis area.

The Clovis Half marathon already is sold out — with 1,400 ready to run.

Sign-ups continue for the other races through 4 p.m. Saturday at the event's Health & Fitness Expo at Chukchansi Park.

There is no registration or packet pickup on race day.
