A Stockton man arrested after stealing a child's bicycle in Madera County has been linked to a case of vehicle and identity theft in San Joaquin County, according to the Madera County Sheriff's Department.
Spokeswoman Erica Stuart said a witness saw Luis Armando Ortiz, 25, steal a girl's pink bicycle about noon Saturday. She said the bike was taken from the backyard of a home near Golden State Boulevard.
The witness got in a car and followed as the suspect peddled his way to Pilot Truck Stop.
Stuart said a deputy caught up with Ortiz, who had ditched the bicycle but still admitted to taking it. He said he had walked from Fresno and was tired of being on his feet.
Ortiz allegedly possessed numerous credit cards, gift cards, reward cards, club cards, medical cards and government benefit cards, none of which carried his name, as well as jewelry, several keys and a garage door opener.
Stuart said Ortiz claimed he found the items in a dumpster. It turned out all of the items had been inside a car stolen in Stockton on Thursday.
Ortiz was booked into the Madera County Department of Corrections on suspicion of petty theft and receiving stolen property.
