Speaking as one of the many who consider themselves to be in the middle, Dennis Hart is right on the money (letter Oct. 24). The country is more polarized than ever. The right hated Clinton, the left hated Bush, and now the right hates Obama and on it goes. Meanwhile, Congress is paralyzed as their only thoughts concern reelection.
Well, I have a proposition. Let's end that concern by stopping reelection worries. One six-year term and out. Double their salary so they can make some money while serving and have no pension or other post-term perks. No lobbying for six years after their term. If you bring Alaska and Hawaii into the Pacific time zone, you can divide the country by three zones and stagger the elections so that every two years a different zone elects new people. That would produce a 33% turnover every two years and 100% over six years.
This wouldn't solve everything, but it would allow our elected representatives time to meet with people who are not at their reelection fund-raising event.
