With competition at an all-time high, owner Terry Brown discusses how he has managed to stay in business for so long, making Western Mobile Glass a reliable and trustworthy shop around town.
What's the nature of your business?
Primarily automotive glass replacement and repair. We do farm equipment, ag equipment, heavy trucks, window tinting, headlight restorations, a wide variety of services. We have served Fresno, Madera and Tulare counties since 1974.
What's the history of your business?
The previous owner started the business in 1974. I went to work for her in 1989 and ended up acquiring the business in 1992. I was involved in a partnership in the beginning and, as time went on, it ended up being my wife's and I. I didn't want to work for a corporation. I would rather work for a local family owned business. I bought myself a job.
What are your biggest challenges?
Competition. Fresno is saturated with auto glass installers. There's a lot of independent installers in town that only have trucks, no overhead, no building. Their prices are cheaper than ours, most of them are unlicensed, and they aren't paying the taxes that we pay.
What makes you stand out from the competition?
One of the biggest things is how long we have been in business. Our name is well-known in town. We give customers professional service at a fair price. We have a good reputation and a good following in town. It's more of a family environment.
What is your philosophy on customer service?
Customers are the most important thing in this business because, of course, without them we're not in business. And that's what I try to teach to my installers and the people in my office. A person is calling here for a reason, they need something, let's give it to them.
What is the secret for staying in business for so long?
We treat people the way they want to be treated. We're kind and considerate and that is the personality that Western Mobile Glass represents.
What's your fondest memory from your time with your business?
The friendships and working with the employees. They're not really memories, they're still continuing. I have a great crew, and we have a great working environment. Also, the people that I get to meet everyday.
You mentioned your wife is also your partner. How is it working together?
We don't work together. I'm not sure if that would be a good thing or a bad thing. She's my partner, we do talk about business.
What do you hope for your business in the future?
I hope for continuing success, I hope that our economy turns around. It's a little scary, but I have faith with who we are and what we represent and how we do things. I look for some better years and growth.
