Madera County Sheriff John Anderson is warning residents about a group of con artists impersonating U.S. drug enforcement agents.
"These people are making cold calls to our citizens, telling them that they are subject to arrest for purchasing prescription medications online," Anderson said.
A Madera woman received such a call Friday morning, said Erica Stuart, spokeswoman for the sheriff's office. The caller told the woman that to rescind the warrant issued for her arrest, she would have to wire money through her local Walmart.
Deputies say victims are receiving calls from (202) 241-5691, Stuart said.
"If you receive such a call, hang up," Anderson said. "Do not respond to any voice message they may leave urging you to call them."
