In response to Douglas W. Sherfy's Oct. 23 letter, who is really writing the "error filled diatribe"? The Republicans in Congress are continually voting in lockstep against SNAP and consistently voting against food and health care services. This is a fact, check the record. The tea party continues to claim President Obama exceeds his constitutional authority despite the fact that they can't get the Supreme Court to agree with them.
America was never a nation of "self-governing states." The Civil War cemented this fact. And finally, ultra conservative politicians have had little to do with anything that ever helped make America a nation of "great exceptionalists," unless the prospective exceptionalist was a white male. From the end of slavery, to giving women the right to vote, to the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act, from the Great Society to SNAP, conservatives have opposed every effort to extend what makes America a great nation to those who aren't Caucasian Christian males.
I want nothing to do with an America "rebuilt" -- read destroyed -- by tea party "exceptionalists."
