Obama's decisive victory
Many Americans are now coming to the realization that the Republican Party's desire to end Obamacare was a complete waste of time and treasure. This skirmish has cost the American economy $24 billion. Let us look back at the results of this Republican exercise in hubris.
The Republicans demanded loudly to defund Obamacare, delay Obamacare, delay individual mandate, deny coverage to the president, deny coverage to the Cabinet, deny coverage to congressional staffers, deny birth-control coverage, approve the Keystone Pipeline, means-test for Medicare, change federal employee pensions, expand oil drilling, block net neutrality, reform torts, weaken regulations for coal-fired power plants, change tax codes, thwart EPA coal-ash regulations, repeal a medical device tax and change rules on debt ceiling. What did the Republicans get? Absolutely nothing!
What they did accomplish from this folly is a current favorability rate of 24%. They have also made President Obama stronger in the eyes of Democrats and independents. Historians will also interpret his refusal to negotiate the ransom demands of the Republican Party, and their more conservative tea party members, as a victory in support of the democratic process. Obama won decisively. Go Obama!
