One of the worlds top professional bicyclists, Britains Mark Cavendish, has endorsed American pistachios as his official snack.
The endorsement was trumpeted Monday by the Fresno-based American Pistachio Growers trade organization. The group represents almost 550 growers in California, Arizona and New Mexico.
Cavendish is known among the top sprinters among pro cyclists, racking up 25 stage wins in the Tour de France in recent years. The fact that I eat pistachios because I love them and because theyre recommended by my nutritionist makes it easy for me to say theyre my official snack, " Cavendish said in a written statement.
Other members of the APGs athletic ambassador team are adventurer Jeremy Jones and the USA mens and womens water polo teams.
In Fresno County last year, an estimated 34,001 acres of pistachio nuts were harvested, for a total crop value of almost $196 million eighth among the most valuable crops in the county in 2012.
