Valley Ag & Specialties, one of Fresno's leading suppliers of exotic vegetable seeds, has opened a second location at Fowler and Clinton avenues.
Co-owner Kee Lee said the retailer's growing customer base sparked the move to the new 5,000-square-foot store in southeast Fresno.
"We have a lot of people on that side of town who have been asking us for a store closer to them," Lee said. "So we decided to give it a shot."
The new location carries many of the same items as the existing store at 2634 S. Cherry Ave., such as fertilizer, chicken feed, gardening tools and seeds.
The store is known for stocking a large supply of vegetable seeds, including Asian specialties such as gailon, bok choy and bitter melon. Lee said the store also carries many conventional seeds like broccoli, carrots, green onion, leeks and mint.
Although Valley Ag & Specialties has many customers who are small farmers, it also stocks items for the occasional gardeners.
"We like to have something in the store to take care of everyone, even if they are growing a few vegetables in their backyard," Lee said.
To help meet its customers' needs, the new store is open Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sunday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Kudos for Eye-Q
Eye-Q Vision Care in Fresno recently provided 10 patients with free cataract surgery. Two of Eye-Q's doctors and the center's support staff volunteered their time for the event.
The center provided post-operative care for the patients in the days after their surgeries. Cataract surgery is covered by many insurance plans, according to the company, but low-income and uninsured patients typically cannot afford the treatment.
Eye-Q is also celebrating its inclusion on a list of "50 Ophthalmology-Driven ASCs (ambulatory surgery centers) to Know" in the U.S., compiled by Becker's ASC Review.
The Fresno center was among six California facilities on the Becker list, and the only one from the San Joaquin Valley.
The review, published nine times each year by Chicago-based Becker's Healthcare, is a trade publication focusing on business, legal and clinical news for the outpatient-surgery industry.
