Pastor Phil Skei of On Ramps Covenant Church spoke with emotion Saturday night as a group of about 30 people celebrated another step forward in the revitalization of a downtown Fresno neighborhood and park.
Five trees were planted along Divisadero Street with the help of Tree Fresno, and a new bench created by ReVive Industries was placed in Dickey Playground on Divisadero. Skei said the trees were a small, first step to reforest the neighborhood.
"When you drive down Divisadero you'll see new life," Skei said. "We are rebuilding a neighborhood. This park was neglected for so long and has been rebuilt in two years."
The bench, he said, was built with discarded parts from other parks and the old window grates from the demolished Dickey Youth Center.
Skei said the church and neighborhood already have their next project. Mosaic tiles that spell out "imagine" and "play" in English and Spanish will be placed on the front of cement benches already in place.
"This is about helping the community we live in by pooling together our limited resources," Skei said.
