The driver of a Foster Farms tractor-trailer died when the big rig slammed into a traffic-sign pole and burst into flame early Friday on northbound Highway 99 in Selma.
The California Highway Patrol said the driver was a 52-year-old Merced man. His name has not been released, pending notification of his family.
Witnesses said the truck appeared to be travelling at about 55 miles per hour when, for an unknown reason, it drifted onto the shoulder of the road and collided with the freeway sign pole, the CHP said.
The right lane of the highway was closed near Floral Avenue, said the CHP, which first reported the crash at 3:09 a.m.
