Army Sgt. Ivan Peterson is the most recent recipient of Home Depot's annual Celebration of Service program which chooses veterans who are in need of help.
John Schuler of Central Valley Veterans said Peterson hired contractors to work on his house in central Fresno while he was serving in Afghanistan. Peterson returned to find the contractors gone, the work not complete and the house gutted.
On Thursday, 70 Home Depot workers descended on the home to do renovation work. The employees donated their time to help complete the one-day project. The state of California and other agencies assisted, and the work was expected to be done before Peterson's 10-year-old son returned from school Thursday.
Outside work included curb appeal improvements like front fencing, brick pavers, paint, front door and a new lawn. Inside, the work included new flooring, appliances, paint and walls.
