Fresno Interdenominational Refugee Ministries and a leader with Fresno's Faith in Community will be honored for making significant contributions to the community during a "Heart of the City" luncheon noon Saturday.
The event will include remarks from Fresno State President Joseph Castro.
The honoree luncheon is hosted by Faith in Community, a multi-faith group of approximately 20 Fresno-area congregations, united around issues of injustice and inequity in the region.
The 2013 honorees are:
- Lucy Allen, a Faith in Community leader through her congregation, Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Fresno. Allen will be organizing Medi-Cal enrollment events in congregations across the city.
- Fresno Interdenominational Refugee Ministries, which works with refugees and immigrants in Fresno, primarily Southeast Asians and Slavs. The ministry group provides services and promotes policy changes.
Andy Levine of Fresno, executive director of Faith in Community, said organizers expect about 150 Faith in Community leaders and supporters will attend Saturday's event.
The luncheon is also a celebration of work that Faith in Community has done over the past year.
That work includes: advocating for comprehensive immigration reform; addressing problems with mass incarceration and pushing for alternatives to jail time; working to stop violence in Fresno by holding weekly "Night Walks;" working to curb "predatory" payday lending in the city's poorest neighborhoods; and confronting a property management company in Fresno that the group considers a "slumlord" for buying up foreclosed properties in distressed Fresno neighborhoods and "intentionally" leaving them vacant until they can be sold for a profit.

Faith in Community is part of the PICO National Network in approximately 150 cities nationwide.
Those who can't attend Saturday's event but would like to support the group can mail donations to Faith in Community, 2101 N. Fruit Ave., Fresno CA 93705.
