The Oct. 13 commentary, "Connected to endless distraction" by Leonard Pitts Jr. brought up many controversial thoughts toward technology. There are pros and cons to the rise of the technology industry -- however, the cons outweigh the pros. Technology has led to many great successes such as disease prevention, advancements in the business world, and convenience. But, with technology, we are also demeaning our society little by little. I have grown up in this technological era, so I understand how attached people are to their modern devices. That does not change my feelings toward what it has done to our society.
With technology came the loss of people being aware of their surroundings. No longer do people walk down the street waving hello and shooting a smile to the passing stranger. Instead, we are laughing at the text we just received from a friend or watching the latest Miley Cyrus music video. Many people carry on these activities as they hop in their cars to drive, which increases the danger on the road. Technology has started to degrade our society. We would all be better off if we were to cut back our use of cell phones and tablets.
