The battle over Fresno's new water rates moved to a Fresno County Superior Court courtroom Tuesday, with both sides arguing over how fast to move forward.
Former Fresno County Supervisor Doug Vagim and his allies want to move forward as soon as possible to start collecting signatures put the new rates to a vote that would be part of next June's primary election. City of Fresno officials seem to be in no hurry.
Vagim said after the 15-minute hearing before Judge M. Bruce Smith that he wants to finish collecting the required signatures by December. But Ryan Dunn, who is representing the city of Fresno, said deadlines to qualify ballot measures don't come until March.
Fresno has sued Vagim and his allies to put a stop to the ballot effort. Vagim has filed his own legal action to get the go-ahead and move the process forward as quickly as possible.
