So many words have taken on a life of their own and lost their original meaning. Truly, language is a living thing. Take, for example, the words: "liberal" and "conservative." Or, even the word "human." What kind of conservative? Fiscal, social, etc. -- or liberal: fiscal, social. The Democrats of the southern United States became, in just a few years, the Republicans of today. The Republicans who championed human rights for 50 years after the Civil War have become those with opposite views.
What about human? Human beings, humanitarian, humanity ... these began as terms of generosity or concern for others. Are the torturers, poison gassers, oppressors and social-rights deniers members of what might be called humanity, or are they more aptly termed the inhumane, inhuman beings? When I read of certain so-called humans who are child abusers, mass-murderers, the we-need-many-more-guns folk -- to do more shooting of other people? -- I wonder if the word human is one of many that has lost its earlier meaning.
