Fresno State junior safety Derron Smith on Tuesday was named first-team midseason All-American by CBSSports.com.
Smith, the Mountain West Conference's Preseason Defensive Player of the Year, was one of only two offensive or defensive players not from a BCS conference to be named a first-team midseason All-American by CBSSports.com.
He has 30 tackles this season, including 2.5 for a loss, one sack that went for a safety and two pass breakups. In addition his three interceptions in Fresno State's five games have him tied for ninth in the FBS in interceptions per game.
Smith is also a candidate for four national awards: the Chuck Bednarik Award, the Jim Thorpe Award, the Lott IMPACT Trophy and the CFPA Defensive Back Trophy.
Bulldogs tight end on Mackey Midseason list
Fresno State's Marcel Jensen was named to the John Mackey Award Midseason Watch List on Tuesday.
Jensen is one of 29 players on the list for the award, given annually to the top tight end in college football. Two other Mountain West tight ends from Colorado State -- Kivon Cartwright and Crockett Gillmore -- also are on the list.
Jensen, a senior from Fairfield, has been a big part of the Bulldogs offense that ranks fourth nationally in passing at 374.0 yards per game and fifth in scoring at 47.4 points per game. He has 14 receptions for 226 yards and his 16.1 average per reception ranks second on the team.
The Mackey semifinalists will be announced Nov. 18 and the award will be presented Dec. 12.
Phil Steele midseason All-Mountain West team
Fresno State had 11 players selected to the Phil Steele midseason All-Mountain West teams, including a conference-best seven first-teamers.
First-team Bulldogs offensive players: quarterback Derek Carr, wide receiver Davante Adams and left tackle Austin Wentworth.
First-team Bulldogs defensive players: Nose guard Tyeler Davison, cornerback L.J. Jones and safety Derron Smith
First-team Bulldogs special-teams players: punt returner Isaiah Burse.
Second-team Bulldogs players: Defensive ends Andy Jennings and Nikko Motta, inside linebacker Karl Mickelsen and offensive guard Cody Wichmann.
Third-team Bulldogs players: Receivers Josh Harper and Burse.
