In July, my sister and I exchanged homes with a couple in Tallinn, Estonia. Our beautiful two-story home was located a ways out from the center of town in a woodsy area similar in appearance to Yosemite Valley. To visit the historic downtown, go shopping, or get to the airport, we needed to travel entirely by city bus, something we do not do in Fresno.
Forward-looking Tallinn has installed a system of bus rapid transit that features quick movement along the route, covered bus stops, multiple bus entry doors, instant payment by swiping a card, and a busy downtown bus station located directly underneath a bustling indoor shopping center. In this central location, all BRT vehicles converge, and all their numerous expected arrival times are posted by the minute as in an airport.
Because of this personal experience, I believe any Fresnan would find a BRT bus system an improvement over our current bus system. I encourage our City Council to move ahead. Take a ride on a BRT bus -- it works beautifully!
