A 23-year-old man was arrested late Saturday night in Fresno on suspicion of driving under the influence after he crashed into an electric pole, cutting off power to the Tower District and surrounding central Fresno neighborhoods.
Officers were called to a rollover traffic collision on Palm and Thomas avenues around 11:50 p.m. where they found a burning sport utility vehicle on its side in the middle of the road. The driver was trapped inside.
Witnesses used a fire extinguisher to put out the fire and pulled the driver out, said Lt. Joe Gomez.
The driver, who was not injured, was traveling north on Palm Avenue when he lost control of the vehicle and smashed into a PG&E power pole, shearing it at the base, Gomez said.
The damage caused power to go out in the Tower District and in neighborhoods to the south and west of the area.
Electrical wires were down around the vehicle and along Thomas Avenue. Officers were on location for several hours while PG&E repaired the pole.
