In our house, if we spend too much money one month we must either cut back next month or take something out of savings -- we don't just get another credit card. If we did the latter, we would ultimately have to sell our house or declare bankruptcy or stand at the corner to beg for money. If we decided to print some money to pay for the bills, we'd go to jail for counterfeiting. Getting deeper in debt would catch up to us somewhere in the near future.
Now, if the government doesn't live within its budget, people will scream that we will be in default and all kinds of bad things will happen; or they just print more money -- but don't go to jail for counterfeiting.
It is way past time to pass a constitutional amendment that requires the federal government, like the state governments, to balance the budget. With this, there wouldn't be situations like we see today and no $17 trillion deficit!
