Thumbs down to Foster Farms for not responding more quickly after its chicken processing plants in Fresno and Livingston were implicated in a salmonella outbreak. President and CEO Ron Foster defended the company's decision not to recall the contaminated chicken. But the U.S. Department of Agriculture said that sanitary conditions at their facilities "could pose a serious ongoing threat to public health." On Thursday, the USDA gave the company clearance to continue operations -- but with intensified sampling.
Thumbs up to Fresno State professor Yongsheng Gao and postdoctoral researcher Harinder Bawa. The physicists were among U.S. scientists who helped advance the theory and discovery of the particle proving the existence of the Higgs boson. Fresno State was the only CSU system school involved in the effort that earned the Nobel Prize in physics for Peter Higgs and Francois Englert.
