Three Fresno firefighters made a special delivery Sunday afternoon to a very happy bride after a medical emergency nearly deprived the wedding of its flowers and cake.
The favor began at about 2 p.m. when Fresno Fire Engine 13 responded to a woman suffering from chest pains near Shepherd Avenue and Friant Road, fire spokesman Keola Park said.
The woman, a baker for Sweet Dreams Wedding Cakes and Flowers, was on her way to deliver a cake and flower arrangements for an evening wedding at the Sportsmen's Club on the San Joaquin River.
Park, Capt. Dom Juul and engineer Steve Stowe noticed the woman was stressing out about the outcome of her delivery.
So the three asked their supervisor if they could make the delivery themselves. The supervisor said OK.
The baker was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital while Stowe drove the delivery van two miles to the Sportsmen's Club, followed by the fire engine.
Attendees first were shocked to see a fire engine at the wedding, but those looks turned to smiles as the firefighters unloaded flowers and a three-tier wedding cake in time for the ceremony.
The happy bride invited them back to enjoy the reception, Park said.
The three men, however, had to get back to work.
