A man drowned Friday evening after he tried to save a child from drowning in the Delta-Mendota Canal west of Firebaugh, the Fresno County Sheriff's Office said.
The man, whose identity or age have not been released pending notification of his family, was fishing with a child at the canal. Deputies said the man entered the canal in an attempt to save the child from drowning. The child was able to get out safely but the man died at the scene.
A bystander called deputies about 4:45 p.m. while others pulled the body from the canal, deputies said.
The relationship between the child and the man was not immediately available.
