Thumbs up to Rojirio "Roy" De La Cerda for his appointment as administrator of the California Veterans Home that will open in southwest Fresno on Oct. 18. De La Cerda was raised in the Fresno area, graduated from Fresno State and is the grandson of a veteran. De La Cerda and his family reside in Fowler.
Thumbs up to the Vallarta Supermarket at Chestnut and Butler avenues in Fresno. The store raised $18,631 for Children's Hospital Central California -- the leading total among the 42 stores in the Vallarta chain -- during a one-month effort for Children's Miracle Network hospitals. All together, Vallarta markets raised more than $165,000.
Thumbs up to Fresno's Hoover High School for starting a public service magnet program. Hoover High Principal Lori Grace said the magnet was started in response to a student survey indicating interest in civic engagement and giving back to the community. The program offers public service tracks such as law enforcement, firefighting and emergency medicine. About 160 students are taking the classes.
Thumbs up to Tachi Palace Hotel and Casino in Lemoore for a $38,000 donation to the Central California Blood Center. The money was raised during the casino's 11th annual golf tournament and at the Tachi Palace Community Breakfast.
