Where: Bass Lake
The Valley Runner of the Year Series gets back in gear with its most scenic event. Runs of 2 miles and 10 kilometers begin at Recreation Point and follow Road 222 along the south shore of Bass Lake before doubling back.
The 10K (8:30 a.m.) is worth 20 Series points. Check-in begins at 6:45, and adult registration is $30. Dress appropriately for the 3,300-foot elevation. Details: smokeybearrun.com.
Three Series races remain after Saturday: the Harvest Run 5K (Oct. 5), 5-mile Fiesta Run (Oct. 12) and the 5K Komen Race for the Cure (Oct. 26).

-- The Yosemite Facelift, an annual fall cleanup effort organized by volunteers, continues through Sunday. Register at the booth in front of the Valley Visitor Center from 8 a.m to 4 p.m. daily or Saturday from 9-noon at the Mariposa Grove parking lot. All volunteers receive a ticket for the daily 5 p.m. raffle.
-- The Fresno Audubon Society is hosting its first fall birding walk Wednesday. Meet at 8 a.m. at the raptor overlook near the Friant and Fort Washington entrance. A second walk is Oct. 5 at Lost Lake Park.
-- Saturday is National Public Lands day. Go to www.publiclandsday.org for a database of volunteer cleanup efforts.
-- The 2013 Homegrown Cyclocross Series will take place Oct. 27, Nov. 2, Nov. 10, Dec. 1 and Dec. 8. All races are at Woodward Park.
-- Sequoia National Park, the nation's second oldest, turned 123 on Wednesday. So wish it a belated birthday.
