Cargill has commissioned the operation of a new solar thermal system at its Fresno meat-processing plant to heat water used for safety and sanitation throughout the plant.
The solar water-heating system was built by TEVA Energy LLC. Teva and financier Skyline Innovations Inc. installed and own the system, relieving Cargill from having to make the capital investment to build it. Cargill buys solar energy from Teva and Skyline at rates that are lower than what it pays for natural gas to heat water for its operations.
The Cargill plant processes more than 124,000 tons of beef each year.
