One man is dead and two others have been hospitalized following a collision between a car and a big rig on Interstate 5 in Merced County early Monday, the California Highway Patrol said.
According to the CHP, a 1998 Infiniti driven by Alexander Filichev, 22, of Hercules, was in the fast lane traveling 70 mph north on I-5 south of Highway 165 at 3:05 a.m.
The Infiniti changed into the slow lane to pass a big rig and rear-ended a 1994 Freightliner driven by Mario Herrera, 48, of Hanford. The Freightliner was traveling at 45 mph, the CHP said.
An elderly Hercules man who was a passenger in the Infiniti was killed. He was not wearing a seatbelt, the CHP said. His name was not released until family could be notified.
Filichev sustained major injuries and was taken by ambulance to Memorial Hospital, Los Banos. The Infiniti's right front passenger, Serguy Filichev, 50, of Hercules, also sustained major injuries and was airlifted to Memorial Medical Center in Modesto.
Herrera, the big-rig driver, was not injured.
