A 58-year-old woman was killed Wednesday when she stepped in front of a northbound freight train in downtown Hanford, police said.
The woman, whose name was withheld until her family could be notified, was pronounced dead at the scene of the 11 a.m. collision.
Hanford police said the woman was either walking north along the tracks or attempting to cross the tracks outside of a controlled railroad crossing near West Lacy Boulevard and Santa Fe Street when she was struck by a BNSF freight train.
Traffic was diverted for about 2 1/2 hours from intersections beginning at Eleventh Avenue south to Third Street.
