A 33-year-old Avenal man is dead after the car he was riding in crashed into the back of a big-rig truck truck north of Lemoore, the California Highway Patrol said.
The Freightliner truck was traveling south on Highway 41 around 4:25 p.m. Thursday when it stopped near Grangeville Boulevard because of heavy traffic, the CHP said.
For an unknown reason, the 31-year-old driver of a 1996 Ford failed to slow down and collided into the rear of the truck.
The victim, who has not been identified pending notification of family, was one of three passengers in the Ford. He suffered major injuries and was taken to Adventist Medical Center, where he died.
The two other passengers suffered major and minor injuries. The driver had moderate injuries.
Alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash, the CHP said. The collision is under investigation.
