Thumbs up, thumbs down

September 6, 2013

Thumbs up to Cary Edmondson for having two photographs on Sports Illustrated magazine covers. Edmonson, whose primary job is campus photographer at Fresno State, also shoots sports assignments for USA Today on weekends. His photo of San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick is one of four regional covers for the magazine's Sept. 2 NFL Preview Issue. A photo of Stanford football player Shayne Skov was one of six regional covers for the magazine's special Aug. 19, 2013 College Football Preview. Edmonson is a 2003 graduate of Fresno State.

Thumbs up to Gary Banuelos, John Diener and John Freeman for developing cactus that can be grown in areas with high selenium levels and limited water. Diener's Red Rock Ranch intends to develop and sell juice and powder blends derived from the new plants. Banuelos is a plant and soil scientist with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and Freeman is a former Fresno State plant scientist. Patents on the cactus are shared by Red Rock Ranch, Fresno State and the USDA.

Thumbs up to Navy Capt. Rob Osterhoudt and Cmdr. Robert Loughran of Lemoore Naval Air Station for completing 1,000 aircraft carrier landings each. Both recently reached the milestone with landings on the USS Nimitz in the Gulf of Oman. According to Tailhook Association, a support group for carrier aviation, fewer than 500 pilots have reached 1,000 carrier landings in the history of naval aviation. The Navy says that Loughran and Osterhoudt together have landed their jets on 16 different carriers.
