The body of a 60-year-old Torrance man was recovered Monday after falling about 200 feet off a cliff near Mount Whitney at Sequoia National Park, park officials said.
Authorities said Yukio Kato was at 13,500 feet above sea level on his way back to the Whitney Portal trailhead Sunday when the accident happened about 1:30 p.m.
Earlier in the day, Kato and three other people hiked from the Whitney Portal trailhead in the Inyo National Forest to the summit of Mount Whitney. The other three hikers were not injured.
The National Park Service dispatched a helicopter and park medic to where the accident took place but because daylight was running out they weren't able to recover the body until Monday.
The cause of the fall is under investigation but weather is not considered to be a factor.
The Inyo County Sheriff's Office, Inyo National Forest, and Tulare County Sheriff's Department assisted in the recovery of the body.
