A Hoover High School student was detained Monday by Fresno Fire Department investigators for setting a pine tree on fire on campus.
The student used a lighter to set the 50-foot-tall tree ablaze about 3:20 p.m.
Witnesses identified the student, who also was viewed on surveillance video lighting the tree.
The fire did not spread to other trees and the nearest building, about 100 feet away, also was not threatened.
"There were a number of trees it could have spread to on a windy day, but it wasn't windy so the fire stayed put for the most part," said Koby Johns, Fresno Fire Department spokesman.
The fire was out by 3:30 p.m., a few minutes after firefighters arrived.
