The Fresno Fire Department evacuated a gas station and a car wash west of Highway 99 as a precaution Sunday afternoon after a nearby power pole was hit by a car and then caught fire.
The accident happened around 4:30 p.m. near the intersection of Ashlan Avenue and Parkway Drive, next to Highway 99.
The pole is being held up by high voltage lines and the base is burning, said Capt. Larry French. The fire department is waiting for PG&E to arrive and assess the pole.
The Shell gas station and the car wash on Parkway Drive were evacuated, French said.
The fire department has asked Fresno police and the California Highway Patrol to close the intersection and the Highway 99 exit to Ashlan Avenue.
Damage to the pole left nearly 3,000 PG&E customers without power for a little more than an hour, PG&E spokesman J.D. Guidi said.
Four customers in the area were still without power as of 7 p.m., but Guidi said electricity is expected to be restored sometime Sunday night. He didn't know when the pole would be repaired.
