A police pursuit in central Fresno on Friday night ended with the death of a bicyclist after he was hit by a police cruiser, Police Chief Jerry Dyer said.
The chase began just after 7:30 p.m. when two officers patrolling in the area of Princeton and Glenn avenues tried to stop two men on bicycles, Dyer said.
One of the men fled on his bike and was chased by an officer in the cruiser after the other officer got out to arrest the other bicyclist.
Dyer said the fleeing man, who police believe to be in his 30s, turned into an alley off Del Mar Avenue, where the fatal collision occurred. He said the details of the crash are under investigation by the collision reconstruction unit with the help of the California Highway Patrol.
Both officers are veterans, Dyer said, and the officer involved in the crash was put on paid administrative leave as standard procedure. Both officers will be interviewed at police headquarters, Dyer said.
"It's an unfortunate tragedy that resulted in someone's death," he said. "We're going to do everything we can to discover the cause."
