The animal rescue group Animal Compassion Team now has an adoption facility.
Better known as ACT, the nonprofit group moved into a 12,000-square-foot building on two acres at 2789 S. Orange Ave. in Fresno. A grand opening/anniversary celebration will be 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday. About 150 dogs and cats are available for adoption.
ACT was founded in August 2009 without a central location. All animals lived in foster homes, and adoptions were held mainly out of Whitie's Pets in Fresno on weekends.
ACT's mission remains the same: To provide a safe haven for domestic animals through rescue, rehabilitation, adoption and sanctuary, to advocate for the humane treatment of animals, to educate about the importance of responsible pet ownership and to work with other animal rescues and shelters toward becoming a no-kill nation.
ACT is run entirely by about 100 volunteers and operates solely from donations. There is no paid staff. The volunteers have worked the past eight months to clean up the new property, which was donated by Derrel Ridenour, who runs Derrel's Mini Storage and funded the HOPE Animal Foundation.
ACT volunteer Carren McDaniel has painted halls with pink poodles chumming with cats and rainbows arching over bridges.
Brenda Mitchell, ACT president, says the artwork helps the center create a sense of feeling good about adopting pets.
"We wanted to create a place where the animals could have good care," she says, "as well as create a place where people could feel good after seeing the animals. We wanted to get past places where you feel down-hearted.
"We're trying to celebrate life, not be sad."
As part of the adoption process, ACT workers help match up the right animal with the right family, so there is a long-term connection.
Cost is $185 per dog or $65 per cat. All animals are spayed or neutered, micro-chipped, vaccinated and treated for ticks and fleas.
The center is open 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays and by appointment during the week.
