A 12-year-old Clovis boy was killed Friday in an all-terrain vehicle accident northeast of Fresno.

California Highway Patrol investigators said the boy, Zachary Leeworthy of Clovis, was riding a Honda quad ATV on a dirt road near Auberry Road, about two miles north of Copper Avenue. Officers reported that the boy apparently tried to cross Auberry Road and drove into the path of a 2007 BMW driven by a 19-year-old Fresno man.

The driver of the BMW tried to brake to avoid the ATV, but the car struck the left side of the quad. The boy was thrown from the ATV and died of his injuries at Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno.

According to information from the Fresno County Coroner's Office, Zachary would have celebrated his 13th birthday on Thursday.

A passenger in the BMW received a moderate injury and was taken to Clovis Community Hospital for treatment. Investigators said the crash was under investigation but reported that neither drugs nor alcohol appeared to be involved.
